Hi Ellie’s Mom, thank you for your response to my post. I will definitely look at all the links you attached. I did get a chance to see the Sammy Haddock article you attached and from the linked article in the Washington Post it looks as though most of the photos were at least 7 years old – very disturbing nonetheless. To give another view of Ringling, they do have the Ringling Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida – http://www.elephantcenter.com/ which looks like a great facility for the elephants. In any case, thank you for offering another perspective and for shedding light on the subject. It is always a good thing to learn more and hear others opinions.

From one Mother to another Mother,
When Ringling Bros Circus comes to town they really create lots of excitement for our children but as a Parent I have some serious concerns about Ringling Bros Circus, I think it important for other Mothers to know because our position as a Mother is important, this information is not pleasant, abuse never is, but for me to remain silent would to be knowingly perpetuate the abuse of these Circus Elephants and other animals. While the Clowns entertainment is innocent part of the Show, the way Ringling treats their Elephant is abusive, these photos of Ringling elephant trainers forcing a 2 year old baby elephants to do tricks that they will have to perform in the shows, is so sad. Ringling calls it training, but when you use a Hot Shot, a bullhook and ropes tied around the baby elephants legs and groups of men are pulling its legs out from underneath it, I call it animal abuse.
I explained to my children the reason we don’t go to the Circus is because we care about the humane treatment of these Elephants and all animals, I told them that human and elephants have the same kind of emotional family, mother and daughter elephants in the wild live together their entire life along with aunts and cousins, I explained some of the elephants performing are the same age as they are, and that humans and elephants have the same age progression., My children decided they loved animals and did not want them harmed just to entertain them for a few minutes.

All I ask is that you look at these photos and read the story of Sammy Haddock who used to work as an elephant trainer for Ringling. You can decide for yourself if this is abuse
