I’m totally going to date myself here and say that my first super cool pair of roller skates were the shoe kind (not the boots like my mom had) and they were royal blue with bright yellow stripes and HUGE yellow wheels. They were indoor/outdoor skates, which were a brand new thing, and I wore them out because I rarely took them off. We skated at Lloyd’s Roller Rink in Latonia and my mother once broke her wrist while teaching me to skate there (she was skating backwards at the time). I’ll never live that down.
If you guessed that I grew up in the 70’s and early 80’s then you were right. Skate nights were a BIG deal! Still to this day there are certain songs that I hear that immediately make me with I was back at Lloyd’s with my bright yellow and blue skates on, rolling to the tunes…Funkytown, Another One Bites The Dust…ahh, those were the days.
It didn’t occur to me until my oldest child started elementary school that there might still be fun skate rinks around. The first time the skate night flyer came home I was amazed that I hadn’t thought of taking the kids skating sooner. So off we went to Florence Fundome for family skate night…and the kids had a blast!
Florence Fundome was brought to life in November 1993 by Darrell and Lois Harper. The business was passed down the line and is now operated by siblings Ryan and Natalee who keep finding new and entertaining ways to make the Fundome a wonderful place to take your kids for a night of fun and… dare I say it? Exercise! They have toilet paper nights (yes, you toilet paper the entire skating rink), dollar nights (you MUST have a dollar bill to get in on those nights though), late late skate nights (until 3 AM), and fun holiday events as well!
You can also host birthday parties at the Fundome and they provide everything but the guests and the cake! Prices for skate parties are really family budget friendly and include admission and skate rental as well as pizza, drinks and ice cream for your party!
There are SO many great opportunities coming up with the holidays fast approaching…why not schedule a fun family skate night for your whole family! No department store crowds or crazy prices…just fun, music and skating!
Check out their website at www.florencefundome.com for skate times, admission and special events! Black Friday they will host one of their super fun tiolet paper night events from 7:30-10:30 PM with $6 admission. The December skate calendar is packed full of fun as well…they even have a New Year’s skate with noisemakers and everything you need to bring in the New Year right!
Click on our discount and coupons tab at the top for an awesome coupon for buy one admission get one free! If you aren’t in the Florence area but still have a yen for some good old skate night fun you can also check out Castle Skateland in Loveland or Beechmont Rollarena off of Beechmont Avenue. All three rinks are owned and operated by the same family and all guarantee a fantastic night of family fun!
