Frisch’s is celebrating a brand new holiday – National Tartar Sauce Day!
If you are a Cincinnati area resident and you aren’t at Frisch’s at least once a week, I would be surprised. I’ve been a fan of Frisch’s since I was very small. My uncle used to pick me up in his fancy car and take me out for lunch and I looked forward to those trips so very much. My love for everything Frisch’s has carried over to my adulthood, and as a result, when I had kids I indoctrinated them to the goodness of Frisch’s as well. Sometimes I crave a juicy Big Boy with fries, and sometimes it’s a delicious Fish Sandwich with onion rings. The one thing that’s a constant, however, is Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce.
Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce is unlike any other, and it really seems to go with anything. Want a cheeseburger? Tartar sauce is the perfect condiment. Want something to dip your freshly made, hand-breaded onion rings into? Tartar sauce. Fish sandwich on rye? Tartar sauce.
So when Frisch’s told us they were celebrating the 1st Annual National Tartar Sauce Day on the first Friday of the Lenten season (this year – March 3) and wanted us to get creative with that most delicious and versatile of condiments? Well, to say we jumped at the chance is an understatement!
The truth is, my family and I already use Frisch’s Big Boy’s tartar sauce at home – a lot. One of our favorite family recipes is really just a twist on that perennial Frisch’s favorite – the Big Boy.
Big Boy Pizza
1 pound extra lean ground beef
1/2 Yellow Onion – finely diced (optional)
8 oz. Tomato Sauce
1/2 tsp. Onion Powder
1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp. Salt (or Seasoned Salt)
1 Pizza Crust of your choice (if not pre-baked, prepare according to package instructions)
2 cups Shredded Cheddar or American Cheese
1/2 Head Iceberg Lettuce – shredded
Dill Pickles – diced (we like a LOT of pickles – you may not. You do you!)
1/2 cup Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce – Again…we like tartar sauce. This is open to your interpretation – just do what feels right.
Preheat oven according to your pizza crust package instructions. Add the onion and ground beef to a skillet set over medium high heat. Brown the ground beef, crumbling it as fine as possible as you go. When it’s brown through, drain off any excess fat and return the skillet to the heat. Add the tomato sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and simmer on low heat for 5-10 minutes. Place pizza crust on a pizza tray or baking stone. Top crust with ground beef mixture. Cover with shredded cheese and place in preheated oven. Bake according to pizza crust package directions (ours baked at 375 for 8-10 minutes) or until cheese is melted and bubbling slightly.
Remove pizza from oven and allow to cool for just a few moments. This is the part where the magic happens. Take your Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce and spoon it over the entire pizza. Don’t skimp! Top with shredded lettuce and diced pickles. and voila! Frisch’s Big Boy Pizza!
Let me tell you – this pizza is ah-MAZ-ing! All the flavors of a Frisch’s Big Boy, but with a fun flair! It’s a family favorite for a reason – just look at this face:
While I was whipping up our Big Boy Pizza, I got to thinking – it would be so easy to repurpose those same ingredients into a Frisch’s Big Boy Wrap Sandwich! If you’re watching carbs and are looking to lighten up your meal a bit, this is definitely the way to go.
Frisch’s Big Boy Wrap Sandwich
1 pound extra lean ground beef
1/2 Yellow Onion – finely diced (optional)
8 oz. Tomato Sauce
1/2 tsp. Onion Powder
1/2 tsp. Garlic Powder
1/2 tsp. Salt (or Seasoned Salt)
American Cheese slices – we ONLY get deli American Cheese
1/2 Head Iceberg Lettuce – shredded
Dill Pickles – diced or slices
Tomatoes – Sliced (optional)
Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce – to taste
Mission Low Carb Tortillas or Flatout Sandwich Wrap Bread
Follow instructions above for preparing the ground beef mixture. Once your ground beef is ready, assemble as follows:
Tortilla or Flatout wrap followed by Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce – I used about a tablespoon, but again….you do you! Add a slice of deli American Cheese (you can really use any cheese of your choice – cheddar works well, too). Then follow with about 1/2 cup of the ground beef mixture, lettuce, and pickles. Add a slice of tomato, if you like. Wrap it all up, take a bite, enjoy!
The wrap sandwiches travel well, better than the pizza does, and you can really control the toppings to customize your experience!
By this time, I was on a roll. I was thinking of all kinds of possible uses for the remainder of my jar of Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce. Pasta salad, tuna salad….Deviled Eggs! Can I tell you how many times I wanted to whip up a batch of deviled eggs, only to remember that I am out of mayonnaise or relish? Well friends – how did it take me so long to think of using tartar sauce to put together a delicious batch of deviled eggs?!
Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce Deviled Eggs
6 Hard boiled eggs
1 1/2 tsp. Yellow Mustard
1/4 cup Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce
Hot Sauce – Just a dash or two, for some zip!
Salt and Black Pepper to taste
Smoked Paprika for garnish
Optional stir in ingredients: Very finely diced yellow onion, finely diced pickled jalapeno, avocado, pico de gallo, bacon, and the list goes on and on!
Hard boil your eggs then peel and halve them. Pop the yolks into a small bowl and mash until smooth with the back of a fork. Add the tartar sauce, mustard, salt and pepper, and hot sauce and stir together until well blended. Add any optional ingredients and fold to combine. To fill, you can do this one of two ways – you can spoon your filling to the halves of the eggs (which is what I did in the photo below – not beautiful, but still tasty), or you can spoon your filling into a pastry bag or simple ziploc baggy, snip the tip of a corner, and pipe your filling into the halved egg whites. Garnish with fresh parsley, smoked paprika, diced bacon, or any other garnish your little heart desires.
I probably got overzealous with the filling, but that’s because I was anxious to try out my creation – and to say they were delicious is an understatement. They were amazing! No messing with mayo to relish ratios, either. Perfectly seasoned deviled eggs – all thanks to Frisch’s Famous Tartar Sauce!
