(This was originally posted on my blog, Mommy Bits in 2007. My family continues to dine at Greenup Cafe.)
On Sunday, my husband and I decided to have brunch at Greenup Cafe, a small French inspired Café and Pastry Shop that serves brunch on Sundays. We were curious to try the fare as we had been HUGE fans of the Wildflour bakery that had occupied the space prior and were eager to find a new favorite weekend brunch spot. On this particular restaurant trip we were accompanied by our 18 month old.
Overall we were extremely happy with our experience. Being that it is a popular dining spot, when we arrived there was a bit of a wait. During the 10 minutes that we waited a very nice barista offered us complimentary coffee and chocolate milk for my son. We graciously accepted and continued our wait. Being just 18 months old my son started to get a little antsy. Rather than give us glaring looks – like many of us have experienced with a fussy child – Marty – the gentleman who provided us with drinks – brought over a toy croissant for my son to play with (bonus points!). It was just the distraction he needed.
Once we were seated they brought us a high chair (which I would not of guessed that they would have had) and we ordered our drinks. The items on the Brunch menu at Greenup Cafe seemed, for the most part, to resemble American items that had been given a French twist. My husband ordered a puffed pastry stuffed with geotta and topped with a poached egg. The dish was lightly covered with a delicious hollandaise sauce. For myself, I ordered the Wildflour Huevos Rancheros – a large flour tortilla filled with black beans, onions and scrambled eggs, topped with ranchero sauce and chopped tomatoes. Both of our meals came with the herb roasted potatoes. We both shared with our son, who loved it.
All in all the meal was perfect and everything was delicious. While not appearing to be a family friendly dining destination, I would highly encourage you to give it a chance and to dine there. The menu has a broad variety and there are items that will work well for children.
