I have super theatrical kids. One is a tad more melodramatic than the other one, but both can really put the ham on when the mood strikes them. I have no idea where they get it from (says the person who, as a child, put on shows for her grandparents using a jump rope as a microphone and the landing at the bottom of the stairs as a stage) but I was very excited when they started showing interest in the school drama productions, went immediately into stage-mom mode, and have been firmly planted there ever since.
I was super excited to hear about Camp Jersey at the Aronoff Center. I’ve been looking high and low for theater camps for my boys and had never even heard of Camp Jersey. Here’s a little about the camp:
Jersey Productions is proud to announce its SEVENTH summer of Musical Theatre Educational Programming open to all students, ages 8-17, throughout the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area! Since 2008, hundreds of boys and girls have participated in musical theater activities through our two-week CAMP JERSEY program as well as our various other classes in musical theater dance and auditioning technique. Our educational programs offer general and specific musical theater studies depending on the student’s level of interest, background and previous experiences.
As an advocate for theater education and to help cultivate a lifetime of appreciation for the arts, Jersey Productions encourages all kids to participate in performing arts activities this summer. Studies (and our own campers) have shown that participating in performing arts activities help children with their coordination, teamwork, public speaking and vocal skills as well as build self-esteem and meet new friends! The goal of Jersey Productions’ summer activities is to educate not only fantastic performers but also fantastic supporters of the arts, through understanding, for the rest of their lives!
I truly and deeply believe that theater is a window to a child’s self esteem. I’ve seen it happen with my own youngest son who, prior to attending Camp Carnegie a few years ago, glued himself to my side and was as shy as they come. I saw him bloom on the Carnegie stage and that one experience has instilled a love of theater and acting that has given him bountiful self esteem and confidence that can be seen in all parts of his life.
Camp Jersey has turned out to be an answer to a dream for our family. I’ve been searching high and low for an affordable theater camp that would give my kids an overall look at what goes in to a theatrical production – from acting to voice and dance, then everything in between. They have an amazing drama club at their school and have participated in the last 3 musical productions so they have some experience, but nothing beats having trained professionals teach you the ropes! Here’s a description of Camp Jersey:
CAMP JERSEY (ages 8-15) is an opportunity for young performers to participate and learn the “ins and outs” of the world of musical theatre. With daily voice, dance and acting classes, campers will work side-by-side with professionals and perform in their own showcase at the end of camp.
Exactly what we were searching for! Beyond Camp Jersey, there are several other camps offered as well:
- CAMP JERSEY DANCE (ages 10-17) All Musical Theater dance styles…all afternoon.
- CAMP JERSEY AUDITION (ages 10-17) provides the tools you need to land your next audition! Audition dance, song cuts, monologues & improvisational skills will be emphasized.
- CAMP JERSEY INTENSIVE (ages 8-15)The one-week version of CAMP JERSEY – is an opportunity for young performers to participate and learn the “ins and outs” of the world of musical theatre. With daily voice, dance and acting classes, campers will work side-by-side with professionals and perform the CAMP JERSEY showcase at the end of camp.
- CAMP JERSEY PRODUCTION! (ages 11-17) participants in this two-week camp will rehearse and perform FAME Jr. in the Jarson-Kaplan theater at the Aronoff Center. Lights, sound, costumes…let’s put on a show!
It’s one stop theater camp shopping! I can’t think of a more amazing way to introduce your children to musical theater, or to show them some new tips, tricks, and a step or two if they’ve already dipped their toes into the theater pool. I am extremely excited to be sending both of my kids to this camp over the summer…and I’m also very excited to be able to offer a session at Camp Jersey to one lucky FFC reader as well!
