If you read our blog regularly, it’s no secret that we love theatre, and that we love Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati (ETC). Today, several of us were invited to attend a preview of Sleeping Beauty, ETC’s annual family friendly fairytale production which opens December 3, 2014.
Let us just get right to the point…. From the magical notes sung throughout the show by the whimsical fairies Marigold, Daisy and Liliac, to the chilling cackles of the evil Whisteria and her assistant, from beginning to end, we loved Sleeping Beauty.
Of course because it’s ETC, Sleeping Beauty takes a slightly twisted spin on the classic tale that we all know and love from our childhoods. This version, done as a musical, features Briar Rose, her overprotective parents, the three wacky fairies we mentioned above (who might just remind you of these ladies), and a wickedly, wicked fairy (Whisteria) and her assistant.

For those of you who have attended ETC shows in the past, you will definitely recognize a few folks in the show. Playing the fairies you will find three of our favorite ETC regulars – actresses Sara Mackie (Marigold), Brooke Steele (Daisy), and Denise Devlin (Lilac). And then… in the role of the wicked fairy Wisteria, one of our VERY favorites… Deb Girdler. Deb’s past ETC fairy tale performances include Around the World in 80 Days, The Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland (she was SO GOOD), and Old Bones in The Frog Princess.
Tickets for Sleeping Beauty range from $28 to $44 for adults and $18 for children. If you are on a budget, you might want to try to take advantage of ETC’s half-price rush tickets which are offered for all performances, and available two hours prior to show time.
Sleeping Beauty runs December 3, 2014-January 4, 2015. 7:00 p.m. performances Fri.; 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. performances Sat. and select weeknights; 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. No performances on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. A complete calendar is available at www.ensemblecincinnati.org.
