We teach our kids not to play with fire, but fire can make some incredible things – including one-of-a-kind glass beads.
Brazee Street Studios is hosting the annual Beads of Courage Bead Challenge on Saturday, September 19. Local glass artists gather for a marathon bead making session to create glass beads that will be given to children coping with serious illness to help them record, tell, and own their story of courage.
The Brazee Street Studios event is free and runs 10am – 4pm. In addition to watching artisans create glass beads, families can get involved in the fun by making key chains, necklaces, and polymer clay beads. You can also help with writing letters to accompany the beads. Tours of Brazee Street Studios will also be available.
The Beads of Courage Bead Challenge is a national one-day event hosted at 20 art studios across the country. Local bead makers create unique glass beads that are given to children at 240 children’s hospitals to celebrate different treatment milestones. The program is a resilience-based intervention meant to give children and families encouragement while coping with serious illness. The children tell their stories using the colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their treatment paths.
