Do you have a child interested in visual art, drama, or film? Then you’ll definitely want to check out the winter and spring Scripps Howard ArtStop Artist Series classes at The Carnegie in Covington. We love The Carnegie, and their ArtStop classes (as well as their Camp Carnegie summer camp) are all fantastic. The eight-week long sessions are all taught by local teaching artists, and cover topics including dance, drama, music, visual art, and more.
The winter and spring 2016 classes look as exciting as ever. There’s everything from an auditioning class and a glass class to movie trailer production and an art and science class. Classes are $20-30 per session and are 1-1.5 hours long.

Winter Workshops
Musical Theatre – Drama
Wednesdays, 4-5pm
Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27 & Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24
In this class, students will discover the key to success in musical theatre is making the audience believe. They will enjoy a variety of musical theatre experiences from group numbers to solos, while learning to uncover genuine characters in this larger than life art form.

The Ins and Outs of Auditioning – Drama

Jan. 6, 13, 20, 27 & Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24
Explore the ins and outs of auditioning by practicing introductions, monologues, improvisation exercises, dance combinations, cold readings, and more. Students will learn how to successfully prepare for an audition and present themselves with confidence.

The Glass Class – Visual
Thursdays, 4-5:30pm
Jan. 7, 14, 21, 28 & Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25
With glass as your canvas, create dazzling works of color and light. Using glass, acrylic paint, glues, tissue paper, and more, students will explore a number of ways to paint and embellish glass.

Spring Workshops
Art + Science = Wonder – Visual
Wednesdays, 4-5pm
March 9, 16, 30 & April 6, 13, 20, 27 & May 4
What will happen if I sprinkle salt on watercolor? What if I use a marble to paint? Students will explore the “what if” in art making by experimenting with ingredients, motion, and nature. From Pendulum paintings to ice chalk drawings to sun prints, each week students will explore, discover, and wonder.

“In a World” Movie Trailers – Film
Wednesdays, 5-6pm NEW Later Class Time
March 9, 16, 30 & April 6, 13, 20, 27 & May 4
Cue mysterious, deep voice; flash to explosions; cut to sweeping landscape of a breathtaking, imaginary world. Playing off the infamous movie trailer intro “In a world”, students will enjoy designing and filming their own movie trailer. They will experience voice acting, simple special effects, creating a mood with music and camera angles, and the art of intrigue.
Class Fee: $20 per 8 week session
Nuts and Bolts: Re-Purposed Sculpture – Visual
Thursdays, 4-5:30pm
March 10, 17, 31 & April 7, 14, 21, 28 & May 5
What does a TV look like on the inside? What art could be created with the wires and switches found inside an old computer? Find answers to these questions in this captivating class that breaks down everyday objects in order to re-imagine them as works of art. Students will transform wires, gears, nuts, bolts, and more into mechanical masterpieces.
Class Fee: $30 per 8 week session
Scripps Howard ArtStop Artist Series workshops take place in The Carnegie’s Eva G. Farris Education Center. Workshops take place once a week for eight weeks, and end with a culminating experience for friends and family. Cost to participate varies based on workshop. Participants registering for more than one workshop per quarter will receive a $10 discount. Class size is limited and registration is required.
