February is finally here! For some that may mean flowers, chocolate, and champagne but for anyone with kids it just means it’s still winter. After two months of cold, cabin fever is in full swing but it’s still too cold to spend all afternoon outside. Say goodbye to the seasonal blues and say hello to the Cincinnati Museums. The Taft Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Center, and the Cincinnati Art Museum all offer fun-filled activities for kids of all ages to get those creative juices flowing.
The Taft Museum of Art
Bring the whole family to enjoy Sunday Funday at the Taft Museum of Art. On the third Sunday of select months, the Taft hosts family-friendly afternoon programs from 1-4 pm. Kids can enjoy art projects, hands-on activities, and performances while parents have an excuse to get out of the house. Work up an appetite and stop into the Lindner Family Café for a bite to eat. The Contemporary Arts Center
Impatiently waiting for the weekend? Thursday just got a little less boring. Bring the kids to the Contemporary Arts Center for Thursday Art Play at 10:30 am. Thursday Art Play is a program designed for kids ages 3-5 to enjoy storytelling, performance, and art making activities. Stop by the sixth floor afterwards to explore the UnMuseum, an interactive and innovative art gallery specifically designed for children and parents.
Busy Thursday? The CAC hosts a Family Festival on the last Saturday of the month at 12:00 pm. Kids can participate in hands-on art projects from guest artists and if you have a little Van Gogh on your hands their art can be displayed in the UnMuseum. Stop by for an hour or stay all day, this open-house style program is the perfect fit for families with hectic weekend schedules. Upcoming themes include Home Sweet Home Pajama Party (February 27), Block Party (March 26), and A Whale of a Tale (April 23).
Cincinnati Art Museum
There is no such thing as a lazy weekend at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Bring the whole family along for Family First Saturdays on the first Saturday of every month from 1-4 pm. Family First Saturdays offer it all – performances, artist demonstrations, storytelling, scavenger hunts, and art making activities. The whole family will find something to spark their creativity. Upcoming themes include <3 Art (February 6), Ooh La La (March 5), America (April 2), and Art Scouts (May 7).
The little ones will love Wee Wednesdays at the Cincinnati Art Museum on the last Wednesday of every month from 10-12 pm. This program is perfect for kids ages 2-5 to explore interactive learning stations, listen to storytellers, and put those tiny hands to work on an art project.
We didn’t forget about the older kids – don’t worry! Perfect for kids ages 6-12, Art in the Making is the third Saturday of every month from 1 -3 pm. Local artists lead an interactive art class and gallery tour while kids gain an appreciation for art. Space is limited and tickets are $5-10 so click here for details.
