If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. – Vincent Van Gogh
This week, Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth, opened at the Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM), and we had a chance to preview the exhibition. Huge art lovers, we couldn’t wait to see the collection. Centered around on one of our favorite paintings at the museum, Undergrowth with Two Figures (see photo below), the exhibition spotlights the significance of the forest to many of the works of art created by Vincent Van Gogh.
For Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth, the CAM brings together a large collection of Van Gogh’s work and gives you the opportunity to compare his forest-themed pieces with examples by other artists – some friends, some mentors, etc. – including Théodore Rousseau, Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, and Paul Gauguin.
In all the exhibition brings together more than 20 works on loan from American, Asian and European collections, all being shown together for the first time! Seeing them all together, we were blown away.
As part of the exhibition, to help visitors better understand where Van Gogh was in his life – mentally, physically, etc. – when he created the art on the display, the CAM put together a detailed timeline, and placed detailed descriptions with each piece on display. We found ourselves on several occasions reading about a piece, then revisiting the timeline to see what was going on with Van Gogh at that time in his life.
In addition to the exhibition, the CAM updated the Rosenthal Education Center (REC) to reflect the “into the forest” theme of the Van Gogh exhibition. There, young visitors will find tons of great hands-on art activities and can even insert themselves, and their art creations, into Van Gogh’s Undergrowth with Two Figures.
